Miffy

Miffy was born in 1955. Every evening during a vacation in Egmond aan Zee, Dick Bruna told a story about a white rabbit to his eldest son. This rabbit in the garden of their cottage inspired Miffy, Miffy soon appeared on paper when Dick was drawing. He chose to make Miffy a girl because he preferred to draw dresses rather than pants. At first, Miffy looked more like a stuffed animal, with somewhat clumsy ears. From 1963, when the books appeared in square format, Miffy took on her familiar look with black eyes, pointy ears and bulging cheeks. Over the years, her ears and face changed slightly, but her body remained fairly the same, more round and chubby.

Miffy is worldwide the best known and most popular of all the characters in Dick Bruna’s books, because Miffy meant quite different things in other languages, the name Miffy came about…. Bruna has created more than 30 books about her. She appeals to children all over the world and makes them feel warm and safe. Many children recognize themselves in Miffy and her adventures. She is simple and innocent, always positive and open to new things.
